Why Receptions Track Opportunity

A reception is recorded whenever a target is caught, no matter the distance. That makes the catch count close to a pure opportunity stat: it follows how many routes a player runs, what share of his team's targets he draws, and how catchable those targets tend to be. A three-yard checkdown and a forty-yard sideline throw are each one reception, so the number doesn't care how far the ball travels.

Why Receiving Yards Swing Harder

Receiving yards are receptions multiplied by yards per reception. The first factor is the same opportunity that drives the catch total. The second is where the noise enters. A receiver can hit his usual catch count and land far above or below his yardage line depending on whether those catches came underneath or downfield, and on how much came after the catch. Because a single explosive play can supply a large share of a game's yardage, the yardage total inherits everything that moves receptions and then adds a much heavier tail.

Role Decides How Far They Drift Apart

This is the part with no quarterback equivalent. Two receivers with identical target counts can produce completely different prop profiles. A possession receiver working underneath converts targets into catches at a high rate and accumulates modest, tightly-clustered yardage: a dependable reception number, a yardage number that rarely spikes. A downfield receiver is the mirror image: fewer catches, each worth far more, so his yardage total lives or dies on whether one deep ball connects.
