How to Research an NFL Player Prop: Four Questions
Break the prop into four separate questions instead of reading recent box scores as one blob. Will the player get the chances? What are those chances worth? How might this opponent change the equation? And how trustworthy is the evidence underneath all three?
The Four Questions
Opportunity
Is the player likely to get enough chances?
Attempts, carries, targets, routes run, snap share, and overall team play volume. Opportunity is the floor everything else is built on: a player can’t exceed a number he never gets the chances to reach.
Efficiency
What are those chances usually worth?
Yards per attempt, catch rate, yards per target, explosive-play rate. A player can be efficient while losing volume, or soak up heavy volume while producing poorly. Those are completely different betting stories, and blending them into one impression is how they get missed.
Matchup
How might this opponent change that equation?
A defense can encourage passing volume, suppress explosive plays, generate pressure, or funnel usage toward one position. Matchup modifies the baseline. It doesn’t replace it. A great matchup can’t manufacture a role the player doesn’t have, and a difficult one doesn’t erase dependable volume.
Reliability
How much confidence do the first three deserve?
Is the role stable? Are the last six games consistent, or driven by one outlier? Is the sample complete, or did a quarterback change, trade, or injury split it in half? Reliability rarely argues for the over or the under on its own. It tells you whether the signal is sturdy or needs handling with oven mitts.
Why the Order Matters
The sequence is doing real work. Opportunity comes first because it bounds everything after it. Efficiency comes second because it only means something once you know how many chances it’s being applied to. Matchup comes third because it adjusts a baseline that has to exist before it can be adjusted. Reliability comes last because it’s a judgement about the other three, not a fifth input competing with them. Run them out of order and it’s easy to talk yourself into a strong efficiency number attached to a role that is quietly disappearing.
What This Prevents
Most avoidable prop research errors are a version of letting one number stand in for the whole picture:
- Chasing a big recent game without noticing that the usage behind it’s already declining.
- Overreacting to a favorable matchup for a player whose role is too small for it to matter.
- Treating noisy touchdown results as a stable trend.
- Reading one strong six-game stretch as a baseline when a single outlier is carrying the average.
Applying the Framework
The opportunity-versus-efficiency split’s the one that changes most reads, and it shows up plainly when you compare two markets on the same player. A completion count is close to pure opportunity. A passing yardage total is opportunity multiplied by efficiency. The same contrast holds for receptions and receiving yards and for passing yards and completions.
